This is Pastor Jay's second tour of duty with LMCC. Called as the Senior Minister in 2011, Pastor Jay has come full-circle back to where he and his family have regarded as their home church no matter where else they were serving. After all, this is the church where he had the honor of baptizing his daughter in 1991. From 1988-93 Pastor Jay served as the Associate Minister and Minister of Music/Worship Leader. Subsequent callings from the Lord have placed the Mahan's in pastorates in Long Beach and Inglewood before returning home to La Mirada.

He describes his role at LMCC this way: "Day by day on my spiritual journey I continue to learn that pastoral leadership is more about shepherding than directing - guiding more than controlling. And that it is more about people and less about programs. God created mankind last for a reason, and that is that it takes those made in His image to be the stewards over what He has entrusted to us. While this is true in our daily lives and how we, as humankind, manage the terrestrial resources He has provided to us, it is particularly true in how we, as leadership in the church, manage the resources He has provided in the church and the community at large. This philosophy of leadership is what I try to teach and inspire more by example than in words. Sometimes I even get it right!"

He also has a foundational belief that God is understandable and consistent. When we don't understand Him or think He is being inconsistent with His nature or character, that "probably" has more to do with us not understanding as opposed to Him being inconsistent.  "He's given us what we need to know in the Bible," he often says, "We need to read it for understanding. When we don't understand something in there, stop and dig deeper. That's where the nuggets to understanding God are located. The more we understand God, the more we live lives of faith."

Pastor Jay is a graduate of Hope International University in Fullerton with a degree in Church Growth - Preaching. He also owns a boutique payroll and benefits administration company specializing in blue collar companies. As for family, he has been married to Karen since 1979 and together they have a grown daughter and son-in-law, three rambunctious dogs (Bosley, Walter, and Bella), a horse named Lena, and a wonderful barn-cat named Ebineezer Kitty-Kitty (who gets to stay around because he's a good mouser).
